Programme

“If Yeats had saved his pencil-lead / would certain men have stayed in bed?/ For history’s a twisted root / with art its small, translucent fruit / and never the other way round”.
Paul Muldoon (Irish poet)

Berlin-based Paul McNamara, one of Ireland’s most dramatic and versatile tenors of his generation, and the renowned Dutch pianist Hans Eijsackers will take you on a wonderful and timely musical journey in this, Ireland’s centenary year.

Paul and Hans will explore how Irish literary giants such as W.B. Yeats, James Joyce and Thomas Moore saw the relationship between the arts and social and political upheaval in Ireland.

There may be truth in the assertion that “poetry makes nothing happen” (W.H. Auden ‘In Memory of W. B. Yeats’) but there is no denying that poets from Homer until this day have been preoccupied by war, civil unrest and social change. ‘An Irish Songbook 1916’ features works by three prominent Irish poets, all of whom were dominant in giving expression to the times in which they lived – Thomas Moore, W. B. Yeats and James Joyce.

In addition to songs by Herbert Hughes, John Ireland and Rebecca Clarke, the programme includes newly composed settings of texts from W. B. Yeats’ influential collection of poems ‘The Wind among the Reeds’ by the Australian composer Philip Mayers (b. 1961).

A magnificent mix of music, literature and history in a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.

Duration: 60 minutes

This event is part of the annual St. Patrick’s Irish Festival 2016 at Splendor. A Dutch-Irish collaboration showcasing the depth of Irish music and culture in the heart of Amsterdam.
