Based in Paris, Italian sax player Francesco Bearzatti is, without a doubt, one of the top European jazz musicians. Internationally he is best known as a founder and frontman of Tinissima 4et. With this band he paid tributes to Tina Modotti and Malcolm X, both of which were widely acclaimed by critics and public alike in Italy and abroad. Then he celebrated the musical genius of Thelonious Monk with a project of pure adrenaline, where all the energy and power of renowned rock pieces intersected with those famous themes from the composer who passed away 30 years ago. Now Bearzatti pays homage to the music of another absolute jazz great, Duke Ellington, by recording a solo album that will be released this spring. He premieres this brand-new work in Amsterdam.
“DUKE ELLINGTON, SOUND OF LOVE”
It is said that a journey begins and ends in the imagination and in the memory. At least this is the way it should work. But Francesco Bearzatti teaches us that there is also another way to travel. He starts from memory and ends in inventiveness. Because a character like Duke Ellington imposes on that. His music speaks for itself. He was an artist who has been able to draw, from his own genius, a peculiar propensity to bet on innovation and to change without betraying himself. Bearzatti shows that the music of Ellington is good to know, to accept and then to integrate into one's self. And, that it deserves to be re-arranged and re-proposed to understand how it is able to work today: to evoke, to entertain, to bring joy.
Then the memory of the story becomes the premise of the groove that Bearzatti investigates, composes and decomposes into a kind of an aesthetic and emotional evaluation of the music of Ellington. The saxophonist, inspired and amused, adds yet another personal touch to the story. The songs of Ellington are put to the mouth exclusively on the saxophone and those of Billy Strayhorn – the Duke's most faithful collaborator – are developed on clarinet. And then the fantastic-shaped self-portrait is complete.
FRANCESCO BEARZATTI BIO
Irresistibly attracted by free and changing musical processes, Francesco Bearzatti spent his childhood in the north-easternmost region of Italy, Friuli, sharing, with his peers, his first love for music through listening to rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple and then the punk of Ramones and Sex Pistols, among others. He later graduated in clarinet at the Conservatory of Udine and deepened his studies further in New York, where he met George Coleman.
Bearzatti has recorded countless albums as a sideman and many as leader. He is the founder and leader of the band Tinissima 4et (Suite for Tina Modotti, X Suite for Malcolm, Monk'n'roll). He has repeatedly won the Top Jazz and, in 2011, the Best European Musician at the Académie du Jazz (Paris) among many other prizes.
