Programme

Ommatidium is a cross continental jazz collective combining influences from around the globe with straight ahead jazz. An Ommatidium is single vision cell in a fly’s eye, and like the mosaic pattern that results this group is a collective vision. Each of the members composes for the group and the result is a blend of voices that excite and explore each others ideas both compositionally and improvisationally. The group consists of Elsa Nilsson, Flutes (Sweden/New York); Morten Haugshøj, Guitar (Denmark), Marcos Varela, Bass (Texas, New York) and Kristoffer Lysgaard, Drums (Denmark).

Bassist Marcos Varela began his musical career in his native Houston, TX. He has studied at New School University/Mannes School of Music, was one of the top honorees of the NFAA International Jazz Award and an IAJE Clifford Brown/Stan Getz All-Star Fellow. Varela has also attended the Betty Carter Jazz and Ravinia Steans Institute. Varela has collaborated and/or performed with Billy Hart, The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, George Cables, Logan Richardson, Dayna Stevens, Mike Moreno, Robert Glasper, and Kendrick Scott to name a few.
Morten Haugshøj is a Danish jazz guitarist, bandleader and composer. He has released 3 albums with his own Quartet (Morten Haugshøj Quartet), and his most recent release ” Art Break” (with the top Danish sax player ‘Michael Bladt) has been overwhelmingly well received by both reviewers and audiences. Haugshøj has a modern sound and modern approach to the jazz guitar playing, but without forgetting the tradition.
Swedish-born flute player Elsa Nilsson’s music is profoundly playful and widely influenced. Nilsson has believes that all folk music (including jazz) has a common thread, and that by weaving those threads together, a deeper, more complete understanding among varying cultures can be reached. She highlights this in her compositions by mixing cultural elements to create a sound that is distinctly her own.
