Programme

The Present Is Present: Doek in Splendor

  • Ava: Giuseppe Doronzo baritone saxophone, Esat Ekincioglu bass, Simon Leleux percussion
  • Duo Sanem Kalfa voice, George Dumitriu violin
  • Salmón/Lucifora/Buis/Warelis: Miriam den Boer Salmón violin, Salvoandrea Lucifora trombone, Joost Buis trombone, Marta Warelis piano
  • Impro Jam

As part of The Present is Present festival Doek presents an evening of composed and improvised music in Splendor. Three unusual line-ups display the diversity and depth of the Amsterdam impro scene:

  • AVA began its musical work in 2015. Bringing Western and Eastern musical instruments together, the attempt is to reach a sense of convergence and harmony and create a unique tone in ethnic jazz. The trio AVA play a sort of free folk music from an imaginary country, located somewhere on the axis of Italy-Turkey-Iran. Eddy Determeyer- Draai om je oren.

  • On the path to finding their own voice in music, Sanem Kalfa and George Dumitriu are exploring different musical perspectives. An important one is the melodic approach of Turkish traditional music, and its fusion with other musical genres such as jazz or Brazilian music. Their songs are varied and colorful.

  • A musical encounter between Salmón, Lucifora, Buis and Warelis at Raoul van der Weide’s Oorsprong series back in March 2016 made such an impression on the Doek musicians, that we’ve invited them to get back together at Splendor for another round of top quality instant music.
