Programme

Luigi Boccherini Stabat mater (1781)

Unjustly neglected piece and surely one of the most remarkable sacred compositions of the era.

&

Franz Schubert Quintet (1828)

Universally acknowledged as one of the finest creations in all chamber music

The Stabat Mater has become iconic, an elevated insight into the mysteries of the Passion. Here lies the suffering of Mary, mother of Jesus, at the time of His crucifixion. Here too lies the horror of every mother upon every child's pain.

Boccherini wrote very little vocal music, however the writing is of extraordinary individuality and seems to come straight from the heart. His skill lies in a natural, unforced simplicity of expression, wholly consistent with a mother's internalizing grief.

The use of a single female voice together with a string quintet with two cellos makes for a texture, which can be sensuous, dramatic and lyrical.

Schubert wrote his celebrated String Quintet shortly before he died, and, sadly, he never heard it performed. It is unclear why he chose to add a second cello, echoing the works of Boccherini, rather than the extra viola preferred by Mozart and Beethoven, but he makes full use of the rich textures and lyricism afforded by the ensemble.
More than almost any other composer, Schubert expressed the duality of beauty, its innocence and its terror, its embrace and its rebuff.

His music speaks universally to the human condition, expressing tender emotions that resonate deep within the soul.

Camenae Collective: an ensemble for chamber music, often in combination with other art forms and media

Review: ‘Schubert’s Octet was originally commissioned by Count von Troyer, himself a clarinet player. Camenae, an ensemble of high-quality musician, are in full command of the material and musical techniques. The sound they produce is beautiful and their interpretation crystal-clear.” Jeanette Vergouwen
