Social Sounds (21:00u)

A programme that juxtaposes rhetoric of the 18th century with that of the 21st century

Baroque composers and theorists believed that tonality in the 18th century could assume its own character and produce certain 'Affekts', which was seen to be a powerful element of Rhetoric, the art of persuasive speaking or writing.

In his Fantasias for Solo Flute without Bass, Telemann depicts contrasting moods of joy, pride & passion, delicacy and charm as well as rustic and courtly dancing. These are reflected in not only the choice of keys, but also in the chosen arpeggios, characterful rhythms and lyrical legato lines.

In contrast, the 21st century pieces chosen for this programme by Charles Peck and JacobTV, have speech and text as the ready made source of inspiration, the 'Affects' of melody and rhythm of spoken word forming the basis for both pieces.
