The Gunnlaugs - Ornstein duo was born on Twitter back in 2013, when Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs and bass clarinettist Maarten Ornstein began exchanging tweets about life, music and anything else that mattered, culminating in a “alright let’s play..” tweet that set the whole thing in motion.
The duo actually first met in person just one day before their first gig, at the Reykjavik Jazz Festival in the summer of 2013. Fast-forwarding to 2021, after having played concerts and releasing an album called Unspoken, they are proud to present new music for a new CD to be recorded later in September 2021. The music they play reflects both their musical tastes and backgrounds. It highlights their fondness for jazz that is spacious, transparent and full of detail. The piano and bass clarinet both have a huge range, in octaves as well as sonically, and together produce this great sound that hovers between warm and woody, and crispy metallic.
This duo has it all: the vastness of the Icelandic landscape, dynamics of Amsterdam inner city life, volcanic eruptions, and deep tranquillity, but they also have an extra bit of icing on the cake: Bassist Tony Overwater joins the duo for some concerts and on the new recordings!
