Duduk & Oboe dialogue

Duduk master Hovhannes Karakhanyan meets Maripepa Contreras

The duduk and the oboe: two different worlds each with a wealth culture, songs and melodies. Splendor musician Maripepa Contreras invites Armenian duduk master Hovhannes Karakhanyan for an improvised dialogue between these two beautiful wind instruments. In the afternoon, there is also a duduk-workshop for anyone who is interested in this mesmerising Armenian instrument!

The duduk is an ancient Armenian double reed woodwind instrument made of apricot wood. There is evidence of the duduk's use as early as 1200 BC. It is considered a symbol of Armenian national identity for its ability to express the mood and history of the Armenian people, both natives and around the world. In 2008 UNESCO proclaimed the Armenian duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Thanks to its unique sound – deep and melancholic – the duduk is currently in a process of integration with international culture. Tonight is a beautiful example of such a meeting of cultures!
