Duduk Workshop

An Introduction to this ancient Armenian instrument by Hovhannes Karakhanyan

A unique opportunity to get acquainted with the duduk, a mesmerising wind instrument from Armenia! Grand master of this instrument Hovhannes Karakhanyan (Armenia) will introduce us to the history of the duduk in this four hour long workshop. The focus will be on repertoire, technique, tuning, secrets of playing, reeds, tips and tricks. No auditions or prerequisites are required: all duduk lovers are welcome, regardless of your level. If you don’t have an instrument, the teacher will have some to available borrow (disinfectant will be provided).

The duduk is an ancient Armenian double reed woodwind instrument made of apricot wood. There is evidence of the duduk's use as early as 1200 BC. It is considered a symbol of Armenian national identity for its ability to express the mood and history of the Armenian people, both natives and around the world. In 2008 UNESCO proclaimed the Armenian duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Thanks to its unique sound – deep and melancholic – the duduk is currently in a process of integration with international culture.
