Swarm with Claron McFadden

An interactive workshop exploring free vocal improvisation

Discover your own intuitive and our collective creativity in this fun workshop with Claron McFadden!

Splendor musician Claron McFadden doesn't only possess a mesmerising voice with which she leaves worldwide audiences in awe wherever she takes the stage (whether she sings early baroque or the latest compositions that often were written especially for her) – she also holds an investigative and philosophical curiosity about the world, always searching for wonderful new people to meet, possibilities to learn, and inspiration to create. Claron can pop up in the main programming of the Holland Festival, in an underground jazz bar, in a multidisciplinary experimental theatre piece, in a squat club, or in a music theatre performance that she herself inititiated: and wherever you encounter her, she is guaranteed to blow your mind while at the same time make you feel as comfortable and joyful as in your own home.

In this interactive (and fun!) workshop with Claron, we'll be diving into the world of improvisation, exploring what's 'between the notes' and searching for that which scientists call the Swarm Principle. We mainly know this principle, in which a system collaborates in a collective but de-centralised and self-organising way, from examples in nature such as bird flocking, bee colonies or bacterial growth. But can people do this too? Claron has no doubt about it. She asked professor Robbert Dijkgraaf whether particles can improvise, and when he said "absolutely!" she knew it: if atoms can do it, so can we.

Claron originally developed the SWARM! workshop for singers, but she strongly believes that anyone who is open-minded and comfortable 'making noises' with their own body, can gain something from this workshop. The focus will be on the discovery of your own intuitive creativity and on how improvisation within a group can generate a connective/collective energy: a group which 'swarms' together, moving as one entity toward a common goal.

Duration: 90 minutes

Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?

The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!

Would you rather just visit this concert without becoming a member? Feel free to buy a ticket below, and you're still more than welcome in the club house!
