An immersive exploration of multidisciplinary soundscapes

TRANSFE/\R - presentation #3
A cinematic music theatre act inspired by an allegedly missing scene from the movie “Invasion Of The Body Snatchers” (1956 - dir. Don Siegel)

TRANSFE/\R is the outcome Nistico’s year long research on 16mm film, optical sounds and the possibility to perceive film as a living creature on stage. In Splendor will be performed a long extract form the full performance. This project has an experimental approach to analog film and uses it mainly as a support to organic material growth, projections and as sound source.

The original movie “Invasion Of The Body Snatchers”describes the systematic replacement of a small- town’s population by emotionless alien duplicates growing from seedpods. The clones’ growth and the citizens’ replacement happen while they are asleep. In the original movie, the process of substitution is never fully shown. TRANSFE/\R is an imagination and abstraction of this “missing” scene and intends to unfold the clone’s growth from fungi and subsequent replacement of its corresponding human.

This performance opens a question about how we interact with forms of life different from our and which might upset our set of values. Are we ready to devalue our personal emotions? And what does it mean to live according to instincts which are directed to the survival of the community? The emotionless clones which in the original movie pose a threat to mankind, are here eventually unfolded as a possible resource. They represent simplicity and a catharsis that promises a renewed existence on this planet.

Cinzia Nistico’s research and performance are supported by AFK and Prins Berhnard Cultuurfonds. This project has been supported by Het Huis Utrecht, Bart Gallery and Filmwerkplaats Rotterdam.

Teddy Shouldn't Smoke
Choreographer and dancer Marijke de Vos knows better than anyone that you only have one body, and you have to take good care of it. That is why she and her collective Teddy Shouldn't Smoke will create the triptych Body of Goodbyes, around the theme of the body.

At Splendor on May 6th, you can see part 1: I was old before I was young

In it, De Vos and musician Laura Nygren (Show Pony) ask the question: why aren't we a little kinder to our bodies? We all get older, and this is sometimes a difficult realization, especially for dancers and other people who work with their bodies. Dancers, top athletes, and other artists, usually cannot continue to work at the same level throughout their lives, because sooner or later the body will protest.

But the same also applies to, for example, road workers or construction workers. And even the most boring office job or the nicest hobby is often impossible to keep up until the age of 90.

I was old before I was young links this theme to today's performance culture: we always want more and better, but isn't it better to be a little more caring and tender with ourselves?

The Rotterdam collective Teddy Shouldn't Smoke has been making innovative, interdisciplinary performances for years about current themes such as fear, burnout and sexuality. In this performance, again the combination of dance and live music completely immerses you in a different world: that of the body, and how you deal with it. I was old before I was young, takes you on a journey that leads from a difficult attitude with your body, full of conflict, to acceptance and caring. A warm bath with a hard message: be kind to yourself before it's too late.
