Layale Chaker Trio: Radio Afloat

Na het daverende wereldwijde succes van haar debuutalbum “Inner Rhyme”, presenteert de Libanese topvioliste Layale Chaker nu het nieuwste album van haar band Sarafand, “Radio Afloat”: op het grensvlak van hedendaags klassiek, jazz, Arabische maqam en improvisatie.

Vanavond in Splendor: een unieke kans om de Libanese topvioliste Layale Chaker met haar trio in Amsterdam te zien en horen. Enkele maanden geleden nog bracht ze als soliste haar eigen werk Dawning in première met het New York Philharmonic; Splendor is dan ook extra trots om deze wereldster in ons clubhuis te mogen presenteren!

Geboren in Parijs en opgegroeid in Beirut, ontwikkelde Layale zich tot een veelzijdige muzikante, beïnvloed door de verschillende talen, culturen en stijlen om haar heen. Haar muzikale wereld begeeft zich op het grensvlak van hedendaags klassiek, jazz, Arabische muziek en improvisatie. Ze tourde veelvuldig door heel Europa, Noord- en Zuid Amerika, het Midden Oosten en Azië, zowel als soliste als met de vele projecten waarbij ze als improvisator of componiste betrokken is: van Oxford Orchestra tot West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Holland Baroque, Babylon Orchestra, Avignon Festival, Lucerne Festival, National Sawdust, London Jazz Festival, Wigmore Hall en New World Symphony. Ook tourt ze veelvuldig met haar eigen jazzkwintet Sarafand, waar ze vanavond een kleinere versie van presenteert.

Het prachtige debuutalbum van Sarafand, Inner Rhyme – geïnspireerd op Arabische poëzie – verscheen in 2019 en werd wereldwijd met groot enthousiasme onthaald door o.a. The New York Times, The Strad, Songlines als Top of the World met een vijfsterren-recensie; het haalde #2 bij NPR van de 10 Best Releases van januari 2019, en stond wekenlang op #1 in de World Charts of iTunes en Amazon Music.
Momenteel tourt Sarafand haar nieuwe album: Radio Afloat. Dit album – opnieuw gecomponeerd door Layale – reflecteert haar muzikale wereld, reikend van Arabische maqam tot jazz, vrije improvisatie en hedendaags klassiek, en wordt in improvisatie-momenten verrijkt door de eveneens eclectische muzikale werelden van elke individuele speler.

Layale beschrijft haar nieuwste project zo mooi dat het zonde is het naar het Nederlands te vertalen:

Radio Afloat, the vision of a radio lost at sea, evokes a reflection on the intertwined destinies of people and the natural world, which manifest even louder in times of collective pain; a commentary on the ebb and flow of politics of power and conflict that further the vulnerability of the land and those who tend to it.

Conceived as a suite of eight movements, it echoes “The Trace of Blue Passion”, a poem by Lebanese author Ounsi el-Hage:

“... And just as birds flock wisely
I trekked from ocean to ocean
From peak to branch
From night to night to night
Until I was hit
With the prestige of sweet madness.
After we witnessed the extent of birds' wisdom
I remind you that it is in the nature of creatures
To harm themselves.
I was a turtle on the rocks
Engraved on tree trunks and bolsters
Engraved on rings
Engraved on the ankles of mountains.
And I saw space
So I saw space
And when I saw its beauty, I fell in love with a dove who carried me.
And when she smelled, adoringly, the earth on me
She laid me down in the soil
And from the dove I raised myself...”
