Winter Words

Winter Words, the introspective spirit of the winter season, a journey of love, longing, solitude

Poulenc’s Tel jour, telle nuit, a collection of nine songs, composed between 1936 and 1937 explores the depth and intimacy of poems by the surrealist Paul Eluard. Love, longing, desire and ephemerality of life are only some of the themes that are interwoven throughout this cycle.

BANG Percussion Trio’s arrangement sets to transform the songs into a meaningful tapestry of sound and draw out inner complexities, providing a unique lens through which to appreciate the timeless beauty of Poulenc’s compositions.

In the second half of the concert, the Trio presents to you their interpretation and arrangement of Britten’s Winter Words, a collection of songs based on Thomas Hardy’s poignant poems composed in 1953. The cycle weaves together themes of nostalgia, loss, reflection and the quiet beauty of winter’s stark landscapes.

Join us for an evening of musical exploration as we rediscover the emotive power of Poulenc and Britten’s compositions.
