Tin Men and the Telephone was founded in 2009 by pianist Tony Roe. This innovative Amsterdam-based trio continues to push the boundaries of improvisation through the use of cutting-edge technology. Over the years, they have built an impressive body of work, performing across the globe, collaborating with orchestras, giving workshops at conservatories, developing educational programs for high schools, and creating custom shows for music and technology festivals.
In 2013, they developed their own mobile app, Tinmendo, which allows audiences to actively participate during concerts. Even during the pandemic, Tin Men managed to continue their interactive performances in an online format, enabling thousands of people around the world to join in—and even take control of the sounds in their Amsterdam studio.
Their latest show, “It’s About Time”, explores the very essence of music. Challenging traditional concepts of musical time, they draw inspiration from film narrative techniques, weaving musical flashbacks and flashforwards seamlessly into their improvisations. This performance will be recorded and released as a live album.
Bandleader Tony Roe was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize in 2024—the most prestigious distinction in Dutch jazz and improvised music.
