Jodi Gilbert & Michael Moore
A cabinet of curiosities
Michael Moore (clarinets, alt sax, and piano ) and Jodi Gilbert (voice) are Americans who have lived in Amsterdam for most of their lives. During that time they have been actively involved in the European jazz and improvised music scene, as performers and as teachers.
What is also noteworthy, is that they have been together more than 50 years, and this is one of the rare times that they play together as a duo.
Although the emphasis will be on their own music and texts to improvise with, they will also incorporate a varied repertoire; compositions by Duke Ellington, Steve Lacy, Irving Berlin, Meredith Monk as well as American and European folk songs are all possibile. Be prepared for the unknown!
Michael has had many groups through the years with varied instrumentation and repertoires. He currently plays his 'Universe Quartet' and with the well-known ICP orchestra, and is a frequent host of young musicians at Splendor.
Jodi works with the 'Rara Avis Trio', 'The Voice is the Matter', 'All Ellington' and others. Most recently at Splendor she sang country-western music with her 'Jodi G and the Wayfaring Strangers'
"Jodi Gilbert is an extraordinary improvising vocalist, unafraid of pushing her voice through all sorts of twists and turns" (Bruce Gallanter/Downtown Music)
"She is particularly hard to pin down stylistically, alternating between straight spoken narrative and then also actually sings - pretty rare for an improvising vocalist these days" (Dan Warburton/Paris Transatlantic Magazine)
"Het maakt niet uit hoe vaak je deze man al klarinet of altsax heeft horen spelen, elke keer werkwoord zijn effectiefe eenvoud. Hij speelt geen één noot zonder dat die betekenis heeft. Het zou niet verrassend als het sprookje De rattenvanger van Hamelen een keer werkelijkheid wordt. Michael Moore, die alle inwoners van Amsterdam recht het IJ in loodst. Hij zou het kunnen." (Koen Schouten/Het Parool)

Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to over 50 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?
The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!
