Postcards from Italy - duo Bottasso

An immersive audiovisual journey through Italy, where silent films meet living sound

Postcards from Italy was born from a commission by Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam: the composition of a soundtrack for fifteen silent films shot in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 2023, the musicians and brothers Nicolò and Simone Bottasso traveled by train across Italy to revisit the places depicted in those archival films, recording the sounds of Italy today and engaging with its contemporary sonic landscape. In the performance, present-day field recordings intertwine with archival voice samples from the time of the films, alongside sound fragments, memories and testimonies.

These elements merge with rare footage of Italy from a century ago and with the duo’s original compositions — blending folk, contemporary music, improvisation and electronics into a personal, fluid and powerful language. For twenty years at the forefront of the international contemporary folk scene, the Bottasso brothers present an AV show that is also a collective reflection: an invitation not to forget, to look anew at the places that surround us. A living score that unites past and present, nature and memory, sound and thought.
