Jelle x Tarang
Guitar and tabla duo present new original music + a dialogue between tap dance and tabla
Tap dancer Marije Nie met tabla player Tarang Poddar in 2023 in a unique project called 'Book of Premonitions', where more than 200 students from the IVKO school in Amsterdam were invited to collectively create a 'libretto' based on their visions on the future. They made texts, but also scultures and drawings. Working from their materials, the artists of the collective then created a unique, one-off 'opera' that was performed at De Doelen, Korzo and Muziektheater. In this collaboration, Marije and Tarang found a resonance between taps and tablas, which led to this evening in which they will explore the connections between tabla and tap in an improvised dialogue, after which Tarang will present his concert Jelle x Tarang.
Jelle X Tarang have been developing rhythmically intricate instrumental music built around grooves, odd metres, and shifting rhythmic perspectives — technically demanding yet completely accessible to the untrained ear. Drawing from jazz, African musical influences, Indian classical music, and electronic aesthetics, the duo constructs acoustic music that constantly mutates, where repetition, silence, and sudden breaks shape the flow like an evolving machine. Using electric guitar, live processing, tabla, and percussion, they blur the line between acoustic and electronic sound while creating a highly distinctive and contemporary musical language.
Jelle Roozenburg layers melodic fragments, rich contemporary harmonies, and looping textures into compositions that blur the line between acoustic and electronic sound. Within these shifting
structures, Tarang Poddar — a seasoned artist whose stage presence holds the room with the same focused economy as his playing — navigates polyrhythms, metric modulations, and hybrid
percussion textures through a combined tabla and percussion setup; deeply rooted in Indian classical music, his varied influences bleed into one another in unexpected ways, while the tabla
itself is pushed toward unfamiliar sonic territory, creating a highly distinctive and contemporary aesthetic to the instrument.

Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to over 50 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?
The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!
