RAVEL - Album release!

For many years, Lumaka has been captivated by the enchanting and ingenious music of Maurice Ravel. The ensemble is therefore about to release their new album RAVEL, featuring arrangements of some of his most beautiful works. The Sonatine and Le Tombeau de Couperin were previously arranged for flute, harp and strings. The arrangements of Ma Mère l’Oye and Menuet antique for quintet were made by members of Lumaka themselves.

To celebrate the release, Lumaka will perform excerpts from the new album (and a little more), and there will be a surprise — perhaps you might even win a copy of the new record!

**Ensemble Lumaka **was founded almost 25 years ago by Jana Machalett (flute), Martina Forni (viola) and Miriam Overlach (harp), who were students at the Conservatory of Amsterdam at the time.
The ensemble soon won several competitions, including the International Chamber Music Competition Almere and Het Debuut. Since then, the ensemble has expanded to include cello (Charles Watt) and violin (with various players), and has regularly performed in some of the Netherlands’ finest concert halls, including the Small Hall of the Concertgebouw, the Hermitage and Concertgebouw de Vereeniging. They have also appeared at festivals such as the Grachtenfestival, Festival Classique, the Peter de Grote Festival, the Thailand International Harp Festival and the 47th Istanbul Music Festival. RAVEL is Lumaka’s fourth CD.
Today, members of Lumaka work, among other places, with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Klangforum Wien and Ensemble Postland, as well as performing as soloists and chamber musicians in contemporary and early music. Yet they still find the time to perform together and enjoy making music as an ensemble.

In recent years, the ensemble has increasingly explored music from 1900 to 1940, particularly music from France. This was a period in which a wealth of new repertoire was written for flute, harp and strings, and one marked by enormous social and musical change. In this music, you can hear remnants of Romanticism, the first influences of jazz, a fascination with music from outside Europe, unconventional harmonies and rhythms… and sometimes, as in Ravel’s music, a tribute to the old masters of the Baroque.
