presents Contrasts Festival - Day 1:
OAonTI & Denis Pavlenko Quartet
Two radically different sax, piano, bass and drums quartets - what can you do?
OAonTI performs Old Adam on Turtle Island. A new Amsterdam-based quartet consisting of Polish pianist Marta Warelis, American tenor saxophonist John Dikeman, South-Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong and Canadian double bassist Aaron Lumley. Formed in early 2019, the group’s music combines fiery free improvisations with otherworldly sonic explorations and deep, fractured grooves. They will perform the program Old Adam on Turtle Island, composed by John Dikeman. This will be recorded for a potential future release.
Pavlenko's Amsterdam-based quartet balances out a distinct innovative jazz approach with strong influences of the tradition of the hard-bop era and modern classical music. The bandleader’s warm, centered tone, surrounded by the powerful and courageous rhythm section, handling the energy in a creative, effortless way, combined with exceptional in dynamics and textures improvisations, create the quartet’s personal, sensitive and forward-looking sound. The original compositions transmit an emotional palette through which the listener is to have their own musical journey.
