GenZ Voice Recitals: Voices of the World & A Runaway Princess
A double recital full of folk music — from Bach in Brazil to Slavic subtleties
Splendor and Stichting VoorUit are happy to present "GenZ Voice Recitals”. This series of four double recitals offers the audience a fresh look at classical music through the lens of Generation Z. Eight talented voice students from the Conservatory of Amsterdam and their duo partners take you on a musical journey around the world, with each performance focusing on unique songs or arias from the country of origin of the performing singer.
The second stage: “Voces Mundi” & “A Tale of a Runaway Princess and the World left Behind”
“Voces Mundi”
For many composers, folk music is a great source of inspiration. It is often an important part of the language and culture they grew up with, but sometimes they find their inspiration across the border. Benjamin Britten arranged English folk songs, but also composed “Songs from the Chinese” for tenor and guitar. Maurice Ravel created beautiful accompaniments for French translations of Greek folk songs. And in the “Bachianas brasileiras” by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, Brazilian folk music meets the musical language of Johann Sebastian Bach. Duo Gardenia, consisting of tenor Oscar Sajous and guitarist Joana Faria, fits this special program like a glove.
Benjamin Britten:
- “Folkongs from the British Isles”
- “Songs from the Chinese”
Maurice Ravel:
- “Cinq mélodies populaires grecques”
Heitor Villa-Lobos:
- “Bachianas brasileiras”
“A Tale of a Runaway Princess and the World left Behind”
What comes to mind when you hear “Eastern European music”? A blend of folk motifs, often hard to distinguish, as many struggle to recognize the unique flavors of Slavic languages and traditions. Yet each culture’s roots follow their own path. For Angelina and Matvey, both Slavic, the beauty of different tones and intonations resonates, and they long to share this with others. In this program, they explore how Dvořák, Szymanowski, Skoryk, and Kosenko weave folk songs from Czechia, Poland, and Ukraine into their classical compositions, revealing how the special melodies of their languages shape the music, inviting us to listen closely and appreciate its depth.
Karol Szymanowski:
- “U jeziorecka” (“At the lake”), op. 58 nr. 4
- “Słyszałem ciebie…” (“I heard you...”), op. 2 nr. 5
- “Daleko został cały świat…” (“The whole world is far away…”), op. 2 nr. 1
- “ Zarzyjze, kuniu” op. 57 nr. 9
- “Samotny ksiezyc” (“The lonesome moon”) op. 31 nr. 1
Antonín Dvořák:
- “Gypsy songs”, opus 55:
- “Široké rukávy a široké gatè…” (“In his wide sleeves…”) op. 55 nr. 6
- “Kdyź mne stará matka…” (“My mother taught me…”) op. 55 nr. 4
- “ Me srdce casto v bolesti” (“My heart is often in pain”) op. 2 nr 3

Viktor Kosenko:
