Orlando Gibbons 1625 - 2025

Cantus Quintus Consort: 17th century English madrigals for voice and viola da gamba

Music may have changed much since the 17th century, but human emotion and the urge to express it certainly hasn't. Newly-formed consort Cantus Quintus explores the world of the English madrigal, combining the immediacy of one or two voices with the rich sonority of a viol consort to give fresh energy to these deeply touching works. The programme is centred around Orlando Gibbons' five-part madrigals, including well-known classic The Silver Swan, and other lesser known examples such as the dark and introspective What Is Our Life?

Music by Orlando Gibbons, John Wilbye, Thomas Campion & John Jenkins.

Cantus Quintus Consort:
Sofia Pedro - soprano
Matthew Farrell - treble viol & countertenor
Adriana Mendez - tenor viol
Julie Stalder - bass viol
Xander Baker - great bass viol
