Jodi G and the Wayfaring Strangers
An afternoon of old American folk traditions
Jodi Gilbert: "I have always loved traditional musics from the world over. and although these old Appalachian and country music traditions were not the music I heard in the home, there was a part of me that always gravitated to the melancholy and joy of this music: the lilting vocal embellishments, and the slight twang of the south. It is an inclusive music sung and played not only by professionals but by folks at home, voices and instruments lifted in camaradie and friendship to express love, loss, and story telling.
I have chosen to play with musicians with whom I admire, some of whom i have had a long association with, both musically, and personally. All of the musicians are at home with composed music as well as improvised music and were open to create a personal approach to the music. I thought about the orchestration of the music, which is primarily string and vocal, and how that would best serve the atmosphere of the landscape of the music,. I found a rich reservoir of music, ballads, play party songs, laments, and dance tunes, many songs originating in Europe and then traveling to the Appalachian region. Some of the tunes are quite obscure and others more commercialized. It was often hard to choose between one beautiful song and another. I had to kill many of my darlings.
In this time of unrest and despair in the cruelty of humanity, the solace and the happiness found in the traditional musics reminds one of the connections between humans as they go through hardships and joy. Music as a way to connect to one’s past to one’s ancestry and to find a way to connect with friends and colleagues through music."
