Genieting VIII with live visuals by Lichtbende & Andalusian Orchestra

A musical journey from Andalusia to the Balkans — guided by light and tradition

Willem Boogman selected about forty melodies from classical Turkish art music, Balkan folk music, classical Arab-Andalusian music, and flamenco. Connecting link is a system of pitch intervals, the Turkish mode Hicaz, which is akin to the Arabic Hijas and the Western Phrygian mode. It is these modes that give the music a specific color. From these melodies, he uses the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and metrical contours as building blocks for his musical shapes. Recognizable, but also distinctly fluid, they appear, like clouds in the sky.

“A crescent moon shines south and east of Europe, from Andalusia through North Africa and Turkey to the Balkans. Her light penetrates into Western Europe, and here, in this nocturnal light, I hear the contours of music that is strange to me and that nevertheless touches me deeply. Her rays of sound I catch in GENIETING VIII for Solo Violin”, - said Willem Boogman.

He composed Genieting VIII in close collaboration with violinist Janneke van Prooijen: “I am deeply impressed by her lucid and inspiring playing. This gave me the idea for Genieting VIII”.

After this piece there will be a small break where mint tea will be served.

Then the Amsterdam Andalusisch Orkest, in collaboration with Willem Boogman, will play works where the inspirations of Genieting VIII from Turkey, Balkans, Arabia-Andalucia and Flamenco will once again be heard in their original form!

Magic Lanterns
Amsterdam-based collective Lichtbende works with old-fashioned magic lanterns and homemade sculptures. Rob Logister of Lichtbende says, “We imagine it as a ‘monologue’ by Janneke. She is the storyteller retrieving memories, musings, as it were as if she is walking through a house and new memories surface in every room when she sees an object. We keep the images as abstract as possible to give the music and everyone's imagination plenty of room. We use objects from our collection that come from those areas, such as a bottle of 'tears' from Turkey and a hair comb from Andalusia.”

KlankKleurFestival 2025
The KlankKleurFestival 2025 presents a sparkling mix of visual art and chamber music. Through interaction between sound makers and image makers new adventurous combinations are created. During three days you can see, hear and experience the results of this mix in the Uilenburgersjoel in Amsterdam. The theme of edition 2025 (June 6-8) is Light and Shadow.

The festival consists of an exhibition and various performances, some of which are free of charge.

Participating visual artists have each made a shadow lamp and a light lamp. These take center stage and connect the beginning and end of the festival. The hall will be transformed twice: Friday evening into a Berlin café with the shadow lamps and Sunday evening into a New York dance hall with the light lamps.

Find the full program on the KlankKleurFestival website.

A passe-partout gives access to all concerts of the festival.
