Presentation debut album HYDRA
HYDRA is a debut album of Amsterdam-based chamber jazz group Edson Ensemble. Inspired by multi-headed serpent of Greek mythology, Hydra presents multiple musical genres coexisting in a single entity. Although firmly rooted in jazz, its influences include Funk, Bossa Nova, Afro-Cuban, Impressionism, Post-Minimalism, and Contemporary Classical music.
For this album we collaborated with Toronto-based composer Quinn Jacobs. Commissioned to create new material, Jacobs played a crucial role in shaping the ensemble's distinctive sound. Together, we've created an album that not only pays homage to jazz traditions, but also ventures into uncharted territories, celebrating the fusion of genres and the exploration of musical possibilities.
ALBUM REVIEWS
“..Ensemble passages sound almost orchestral and suggesting a larger line-up than a sextet. With good narrative solos the whole thing is breathed into life..” - Herman te Loo [Jazzflits Digital Magazine]
“..Debut album Hydra by Remi J. Edson is a small masterpiece..” - Rinus van der Heijden [Jazznu Digital Magazine]
