3e Samsoniade
Chamber music by René Samson, Maurice Ravel and Benoît Menut
The works of Surinamese-Jewish composer René Samson are a musical secret that’s been kept too well. It is a rich and voluminous oeuvre, the result of more than 30 years of composing: works for choir, music theatre, and lots of instrumental and vocal chamber music. Much of this oeuvre has been performed, and has been met with much appreciation. René’s music is loved dearly — by a select group of listeners and performers.
Since René’s sudden passing in 2019, the René Samson Foundation strives to reveal the secret of his music as often as possible. By organizing “Samsoniades” for example, concerts dedicated to René’s phenomenal chamber music.
For this third Samsoniade, René will be flanked by two French colleagues: composers Maurice Ravel and Benoît Menut (*1977). From the latter, a brand new solo piece for harp will be performed. Ravel (apart from being quoted in René’s piece “Crossing lines”) provides us with songs, accompanied by the harp instead of the piano — a line-up inspired by René’s “Songs of Love and Merriment”. A veritable feast of cross-references! But above all: an afternoon of revelatory musical beauty.
