Letters to Adriana
The music surrounding Adriana BasileThis performance centers around two extraordinary collections of letters and poems published in Venice and dedicated to Adriana Basile (1586 – ca. 1642), “la Sirena di Posillipo", one of the most celebrated female performers of the early Italian Baroque.
Adriana’s voice captivated the courts of Italy. Through a poetical journey that combines recitation and music, this program reimagines Adriana’s acclaimed performances, allowing her story to emerge from the very words and sounds that once surrounded her.
The two Venetian publications - Lettere di diversi principi alla signora Adriana Basile and Teatro delle glorie della signora Adriana Basile - offer a rare and intimate portrait of this famed Neapolitan singer. Together, they gather letters and poetic tributes from admirers, including Claudio Monteverdi.
Particularly revealing is a letter from an anonymous Milanese writer that describes Adriana’s unique performance practice: she would accompany herself on the harp or guitar, singing Italian and Spanish verses with expressive depth and elegance.
This musical program draws inspiration directly from these letters. It features Spanish-language songs from Adriana’s own Canzoniere (Naples, Ms. XVII.30), and works by composers she knew personally, including Monteverdi and Sigismondo d’India.
Together, the recitation of letters and musical selections create a vibrant tapestry—a theatrical and sonic homage to Adriana Basile, the beloved siren whose voice once enchanted Italy.
