Charles en Johannes

Charles and Johannes

Raised in apparently very contrasting musical worlds and continents, there are remarkable similarities between Charles Ives and Johannes Brahms. Both were sons of fathers who taught them the musical principles, both were excellent pianists and for both populair and folk-music were a great inspiration for their compositions.

Brahms’ first violinsonata is inspired by a poem 'Rainsong’ in which memories of childhood are raised. Ives composes in his Trio memories of his college days in Yale.

Both pieces excel in lyricism and for both composers harmony has no secrets.
Of the two beardman Ives is probably more the hipster: wilful and always ready to disrupt like in the fast movement TSIAJ: This Scherzo Is A Joke.

Heleen Hulst, violin
Mick Stirling, cello
Gerard Bouwhuis, piano
