Wittgenstein Project Presentatie

Paul Wittgenstein, his heritage and the future

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: This concert will take place in de Uilenburgersjoel - Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 91

We celebrate the start of the Wittgenstein Project with a festive concert! Two pianists were faced with an impossible choice in the middle of their careers: give up or persevere? The Viennese pianist Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm in World War I. Folke Nauta recently lost the use of his right hand due to focal dystonia. Both persevered with incredible determination and the music as an apotheosis. It is a heartbreaking and at the same time very hopeful story, which we tell on the basis of the chamber music written for Paul Wittgenstein.

In 'Van mijn hand' , our concert tour, pianist Folke Nauta, clarinettist Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer and Prisma String Trio take the listener on a journey through loss, resilience, passion and triumph.

Four Dutch composers - Marlijn Helder, Prach Boondiskulchok, Jeppe Moulijn and Primo Ish-Hurwitz are writing new work. Director Ellen Blom, poet Herman van Tongerloo and visual artist Hans Jeths are responsible for the direction, texts and decor of this concert-with-a-story.

There is more: Cobra Records has just released Left Hand Legacy, the first of two double albums featuring works that remained hidden from the world in Wittgenstein's library until 2001.

On NPO Klassiek you can listen to Lex Bohlmeijer's podcast series The pianist with one hand, with stories, interviews and historical archive material. Welcome to the world of Paul Wittgenstein!

And listen to the interview with Folke Nauta and Michiel Weidner on this project: NPO Radio1.

Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?

The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!

Would you rather just visit this concert without becoming a member? Feel free to buy a ticket below, you're more than welcome!
