Op 21 en 22 mei opent Splendor deuren en ramen voor de creatieve dwaalwegen van MAZE - een experimenteel muziek-collectief uit Amsterdam dat zich bezighoudt met open vormen, hybride partituren en radicale concepten.

Begeef u in Splendor en kies een plaats of route om muziek te beluisteren die voortkomt uit bewegende partituren, lege podia, stadsplattegronden, zelfbouwpakketten of filosofische enquêtes voor de muzikanten.
Na avonturen met de videoscores van Christian Marclay op het Holland Festival, de pure concepten van Alvin Lucier zoals gekristalliseerd op de prachtige CD Memory Space [Amsterdam], en de vernieuwende partituren van Anne La Berge & Yannis Kyriakides op het Angelica Festival in Bologna manifesteert MAZE zich dit jaar tijdens een tweedaags festival in Splendor waarin Peter Ablinger (DE) & Michael Pisaro (VS) de hoofdgasten zijn, naast optredens van Justin Bennett en compositiestudenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag.

Michael Pisaro vergelijkt zijn muziek met de begroeiing in een veld: ze impliceert wortels zonder dat die ooit als een geheel gepresenteerd kunnen worden. Hij baseert zich op de klinkende wereld, op ’fieldrecordings' als model: die komen duidelijk van een bepaalde plek, maar hun vorm in de tijd is veel subtieler dan enige muzikale vorm.

Splendor opens its doors to the Amsterdam music collective MAZE who invite you to travel with them through their creative avenues of open structures, hybrid scores and radical concepts.

MAZE invites you to abandon yourself and choose one of many routes to listen to compositions that include video, computer graphics, city maps, newly invented notations and philosophic investigations. Following their adventures with the video scores of Christian Marclay in the Holland Festival, the conceptual compositions of Alvin Lucier that they released as the internationally acclaimed CD Memory Space [Amsterdam] and the maverick structures of Anne La Berge and Yannis Kyriakides in works that have been performed locally and at the Angelica Festival in Bologna, MAZE will be appearing at their weekend-long festival in Splendor with guests Peter Ablinger (DE) and Michael Pisaro (VS). The festival will also include performances of works by media artist Justin Bennett and composition students from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Michael Pisaro compares his music to plants in a field where one never actually sees the roots. That is, the growth of the plants somehow implies roots without having to make them visible. "I've always been attracted to things that one knows to have a structure, but which at the same time can never present that structure as a totality. Long-take field recordings have this character: they clearly come from a place, but their shape in time is much more subtle than any musical form."
