Splendor is looking for 3 adventurous and open-minded musicians (F/X)

If you don't speak Dutch (yet), that is no problem. You are very welcome to apply in English.

All about Splendor

You’ll find Splendor nestling in the heart of Amsterdam: a place dreamed up more than ten years ago by 50 adventurous musicians, who were searching for their own independent place to make, create, rehearse, collaborate, and put on concerts.

Splendor is independent and does not receive structural subsidy. There is no programmer, no artistic director. The musicians decide what is to be played, performed themselves or by colleagues they bring along. At the start of the season, it’s not always clear what’s going to happen, and that leaves lots of room for the genesis, development, and realization of new projects and plans.

Splendor exists thanks to 1300 audience members, various income streams, and donors. The audience members play a yearly contribution of €120 and can listen to many concerts in exchange.

A wide range of diverse genres have found a home in Splendor since the very beginning. New and early classical music, jazz, pop, electronica, folk music, impro, and a long list of music from around the world. We remain committed to adding new musical worlds to our collective repertoire.

Everyone is welcome in Splendor, including all ages, genders, beliefs, sexualities, cultural backgrounds, and education. What brings us together is the artistic entrepreneurship of every musician. We know that the success of Splendor is thanks to the quality of our musicians, who play at the highest level whilst initiating and producing their own projects.

What we offer

As a Splendor musician you will get the key to Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 116 – a beautiful building with two halls, studios, and enough technical equipment to make almost anything happen. You can visit day and nights for rehearsals, practice, recording, meetings, try-outs, and giving concerts.

You will put on the music you want to hear in Splendor, whether you perform it yourself, or invite colleagues and curate their concerts. For the concerts you have organized (except for your yearly member-concert) you will share the door proceedings with Splendor. There are no buy-out fees.

You will be part of a fantastic network of around 50 musicians, with whom you share the responsibility for Splendor. 50 professional colleagues ready and waiting to collaborate, to swap ideas with, and to help each other.

What we ask of you

You have, or are building, a professional musical practice.

You are independent: Splendor is a DIY place. There is a small office staff who work together with volunteers to make sure the organizational side runs smoothly. You will be responsible for the content and realization of your plans, from learning how to fix the lights and microphones for your concerts to doing the washing up after your rehearsal.

You are involved and co-responsible for Splendor. For example, helping with the program for a donor’s concert, or bringing a new audience to Splendor with an amazing new project. You can even help behind the bar after a concert if you want to, help with repairs in the building or brainstorm about sustainability.

You are able to function within an organization, to communicate with the office staff, and to keep to your agreements. This can include setting the alarm when closing the building, reporting breakages, and replying to emails. You will join our bi-monthly meetings or send your comments beforehand by email.

You will give an (unpaid) concert/workshop/reading/try-out/any other event once per year for our audience members. You will also work towards our yearly collaborative event with all the other Splendor musicians.

Finally, you will contribute €1000 (this can be split into payments of €200 per year). After you have had the key for two years, we will evaluate together if the partnership is working. That will be the moment that we ask you to make this financial contribution.

Who we are looking for

At present Splendor has room for three new musicians. We aim for an equal balance of M/F/X, and due to our current configuration, we are now looking specifically for female and non-binary musicians.

We are looking for musicians who:

-       Excel in their musicianship

-       Are curious about other musicians

-       Are full of plans and ideas to bring to Splendor

-       Are happy to collaborate

-       Think further than only putting on concerts

-       Have the time and energy to contribute to the environment and ethos of Splendor

If you fit the above profile, you are welcome to submit an application to Splendor. Age is no issue!

Application

In the interests of promoting fairness, we have made the application process as objective as possible. We therefore ask you to fill in a questionnaire. All answers will be anonymous and will be evaluated by a representative board made up of our musicians. Application deadline: 31 December 2024.
