Affinities & Movements

Double LP release by Janne Eraker & Matthew Ostrowski/Andrea Parkins

An adventurous evening of sound from (un)familiar processes equals a rich tapestry of sound!

Matthew Ostrowski & Andrea Parkins
Janne Eraker, Juliana Venter & Ivar Grydeland
Thomas Myrmel & Tatiana Rosa

Elective Affinities (NYC - Berlijn)
Matthew and Andrea's shared fascination with physical and musical gestures, densely interwoven meshes of events, and the aesthetics of interruption and breakage lay the groundwork for this work. Incorporating concrete sounds, cutting-edge synthesis techniques, live processing, and instrumental and acoustic feedback, their work is in a constant state of molecular combinations and recombinations, of forms in states of development, flux, and collapse.

Movement for Listening
The ambition of the album is to find ways to use tap dance as percussion in a variety of musical styles, genres and collaborations. Searching the extreme limits with different sounds, textures, materials, shoes, dynamics, concepts and rhythms results in a rich tapestry of composed and improvised material, seemlessly brought to stage in the capable hands of Janne Eraker (tap), Ivar Grydeland (gtrs/electr), & Juliana Venter (voice/electr).

Convex Stream
The premiere of this project of Splendorianen Thomas Myrmel and Tatiana Rosa, brings the electronic extension of the trombone and flutes through gesture driven performance to a tumultuous form of enharmonic distortion, punctuated by stillness and flowing through harmonic reverberation.

BIOS
Janne Eraker followed her dance training in Oslo, Rotterdam and New York. Eraker is fascinated by the sound of tap dance and is able to use it as a full-fledged musical instrument. Her work ranges from improvised concerts to choreographed dance pieces, in collaboration with a wide range of artists. In 2022, she released her first album with the trio One Small Step to critical acclaim.

Ivar Grydeland is a Norwegian musician and composer, who plays electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, pedal steel and electronics. He mainly operates in the field of contemporary improvised music, but also composes music for theater and dance. Grydeland is known for the ensembles Huntsville (Hubro and Rune Grammofon) and Dans les arbres (ECM, Hubro, Sofa).

Juliana Venter is a South African-born voice artist and actress who trained as an opera singer, known for her outspoken voice, broad palette and groundbreaking (sometimes extreme) expression. Called 'the queen of the South African avant-garde', she is equally at home in opera, contemporary music, folk music, jazz, noise and free improvisation. She was the figurehead of The Mud Ensemble from Johannesburg known for their statements against apartheid.

A New York City native, Matthew Ostrowski (electronics) is a composer, performer, and installation artist, working with custom-made software and cutting-edge gestural controllers, exploring the the liminal space between the virtual and phenomenological worlds.

Andrea Parkins is a Berlin-based sound artist, composer, and electroacoustic improviser who engages interactively with electronics as both material and process. Working with an array of sonic materials – amplified objects and drawing tools, electronic feedback, custom-built software, and electronic and acoustic instruments – her research explores connections and slippages between the body, materiality, sound, site, and space.

Tatiana Rosa is a Portuguese flutist, composer and audio-visual artist, currently based in Amsterdam. Her work, deeply linked with the use of electronics, digital tools, as well as literal and intuitive interpretation of data, aims to redirect the use of technology and data driven experiences, by subverting their use, while establishing close relationships between art, socio-political awareness, and technological impact.

Thomas Myrmel is a composer, performer and multifaceted artist, weaving the notions of social change, craftsmanship and creative expression into every aspect of his practice. He uses the techniques he acquired while studying composition at Conservatories in Rennes (FR) Chicago (USA) and Amsterdam (NL) to create music theater productions and performance art as well autonomous music for festivals throughout Europe, the middle east, the USA and Japan.
