Ties LC
Ties Mellema & Maarten Ornstein
Over the past decade, I’ve been on a transformative artistic journey. I’ve constantly explored new paths, not to reinvent music, but to deepen my discovery of it—to uncover the hidden connections and emotions that music can reveal. On December 4th, I invite you to join me as I share these discoveries with you, both through words and music. The evening will be an eclectic blend of baroque, impressionism, contemporary music, and even techno. But more than that, it’s a chance to reflect together on the deeper intersections of life and art. I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
Ties and Maarten bring to life the unique duets of Charles Koechlin, pieces that are unlike anything else. This music blends elements of impressionism, neoclassicism, and renaissance styles.
Additionally, Tobias and Ties will perform the dreamy Légende by Florent Schmitt, a beautiful impressionist piece for saxophone and piano that feels like a musical poem.
The evening concludes with an intense baritone saxophone solo by Ties, featuring a minimalist work by David Lang. He will also present several new original compositions inspired by dance music.
A unique and surprising evening that explores the boundaries of classical repertoire, just as we’ve come to expect from Ties!
Ties Mellema, saxophones, electronics;
Maarten Ornstein, bass clarinet
Tobias Borsboom, piano
Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?
The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!
Would you rather just visit this concert without becoming a member? You're more than welcome! Buy your ticket(s) below.
