Bringing innovation — that’s what reed quintet Calefax has been doing for almost 40 years. Starting in 1985, they were the very first to bring the combination of oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon to the stage. Today, the reed quintet is a firmly established name in the musical landscape. To this day, Calefax continues to discover repertoire that perfectly suits the reed quintet setup, from classics to unjustly forgotten gems and newly composed works. “You sound like a walking organ!” – that’s something the musicians of Calefax often hear about their music. It’s not a strange comparison: just like an organ, they blow air through pipes to create sound, producing a rich variety of tones, from subtle to powerful and dramatic. But the organ is almost always housed in a church, with its accompanying acoustics and religious atmosphere. The reed players take the organ out of the church and, with this album, deliver a crash course on the most beautiful organ music, spanning from the Baroque era to the 20th century.

Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists.
