On the Run

New Amsterdam-based percussion collective plays What's The Point: A Day In Music

After two years of intelligent, strict, half-strict, and unpredictable lockdowns, a wave of creative outbursts was to be expected out of this long period of seclusion – and this wave can finally start reaching the stage! Take the brand new Amsterdam percussion collective On The Run with their project What's The Point: a direct response to the unexpected abundance of spare time in which these four restless percussionists suddenly found themselves. Being unable to play their instruments, they threw themselves into deep reflections and discussions about the big WHY of so many daily habits – from the constant flow of information to news to likes to followers to appointments to smart algorithms to fake news to the things we ourselves decide to do... with the constantly recurring question: “What's the point?”
For On The Run's very first tour, this central question – with its underlying themes of friendship, work and society – were translated into a dynamic music programme with old and new music, theatre, multimedia, live electronics and a broad spectrum of percussion instruments (which, luckily, have been dusted off and are being played eagerly again). With music by Steve Reich, John Cage, Georges Aperghis, The Beatles and Jacob Collier.

On The Run's individual players had been collaborating frequently before TROMP award-winner Agostinho Sequeira took the initiative to bundle their shared vision and throw the primal power of percussion into the world. ”What brings us together is the love for percussive experimentation and the search for creative innovation. We combine the diversity and flexibility of our personal backgrounds and our instrument itself to create an experience that touches the listener in a spiritual way. Percussion can be found in every corner of the globe, and has a primal power that speaks to all of us. Join us for a journey in sounds, rhythms and encounters of all kinds.”
