Si Paton & Robert Nettleship (duo) / Pietro Frigato (solo)

Splendor transforms into the epicentre of abrasive Avant Jazz and Noise

Tonight, Splendor will be transformed into the epicentre of abrasive Avant Jazz/Noise with the maverick duo Si Paton (UK)/Robert Nettleship (UK). They will be supported by a solo set by guitarist/composer Pietro Frigato (IT).

Si Paton and Robert Nettleship are a drums and bass guitar duo specialising in free improvisation. A cross-collaboration project between Birmingham and The Hague, their performances exist in that musical sweet spot where avant-jazz, noise rock and contemporary composition converge. Based on the powerhouse rhythm sections of bands and musicians from the noise rock scene such as Weasel Walter, Tim Dahl and Lightning Bolt, and the frantic interplay of groups like Hella, their shows are brash, unpredictable and relentless. Both have had respected careers as composer/improvisers (Nettleship with the solo album “Embodied” and Paton for his work with prog-jazz group Selectric) and this collaboration has further rooted them into bright and intense sonic ground.

Pietro Frigato is a guitarist, composer, improviser, teacher and artistic director born in Italy and based in Rotterdam. He graduated in composition at the Conservatoire F. Venezze in Rovigo, Italy. His research focuses on improvisation, on the concept of boundaries in music, on the edge of perceptions, on the distortion and compression of the signal as poetic, aesthetic, and conceptual tools. Since 2018, Pietro has been artistic director of the Cataclisma Improvisation Festival, which offers a platform for new music, improvisation and social projects.
