At the beginning of the 20th century, Buenos Aires was rapidly turning from provincial swamp to world class hub. This disconcerting metamorphosis provoked a quest for a local identity, a sense of belonging to the inhabitants of a city and a country that were rapidly changing beyond recognition. The venerable image of the outlaw, wandering gaucho, roaming around the pampas with nothing more than his horse and his guitar, became a symbol of resistance in the face of modernity. And with it, the "canto criollo", a series of poetic and musical genres based on the old dances and songs of 19th century Argentina.

We will bring to you a program of music that could have been heard back then, late at night, in a cafe or in a political comité in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Taking songs from the most important singers and players from the 1900's to the 1920's, we will show the rich diversity and beauty of the long forgotten early repertoire around which tango legend Carlos Gardel grew. The "vidalitas", "tristes" and "estilos", will alternate with the earliest tangos in record. From the old country-side traditions to the new exciting folies from the cosmopolitan city, soon to be exported to the whole world...

All this in an original 1913-15 Francisco Nuñez' guitar and a recently restored Rebasti guitar from 1910-21.
