Mirovoi - by Nieuw Amsterdams Peil (LIVE & STREAM)

A timelapse of the eternal cycle of creation and destruction

Composer Janco Verduin gets often inspired by scientific phenomena . In his music unexpected turns stand out. The listener almost feels de physical necessity to want to follow everything happening. Even if many things occur at the same moment. Nieuw Amsterdams Peil - the band that doesn’t recoil for any genre or style - plunges itself into his imaginative sound world.

Also early geology interest him. In Mesoproterozoïcum (for piano solo) Janco Verduin summarises 600.000.000 years in 20 minutes. In that time it was busy because the supercontinent Columbia fell apart, and the new continent Rodinia was formed and evolution came across a new method: sexual reproduction, It must have been ill at ease those years. In Mesoproterozoïcum pianist Gerard Bouwhuis takes up the fight against antimetric figures which unfold themselves slowly. The moment one creates a supercontinent (which doesn’t occur very often), all the land sticks together. A logical result is that this land is surrounded by one big superocean. In the case of Rodinia this was superocean Mirovoi. The piece Mirovoi was written for trio Rodinia. The revised version is a time-lapse on the eternal cycle of creation and destruction which formed our planet. Heleen Hulst and Gerard Bouwhuis have played the duo Ghoti previously. Ghoti is pronounced as 'fish'; the gh from enough, the o from women, ti from motion. For this concert Verduin revised and transformed the fish into fishfingers. The most yummie parts of the fish got crunchy in this version for ensemble.

Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?

The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!
