Daan Manneke 80

Chamber music by Manneke, Messiaen, De Leeuw and Bulsink

In november 2019 Daan Manneke turned 80. A great reason for a small “afterparty” in Splendor with his music, compositions from his inspirators and teachers Olivier Messiaen and Ton de Leeuw, and music by Wilbert Bulsink, who belongs to a generation of composers educated by Daan Manneke.

Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad wrote a review titled “The mesmerizing and capricious islands of Manneke” about his recent composition De grote Archipel: “In Mannekes music sparkling vastness, quietness and tranquility dominate. His music is anything but tame, but spiky outbursts are always followed by steadfast, purifying calmness.” Nothing is less true, will this concert prove.

The program gives a great overview of the variety in Mannekes oeuvre. All important musical themes of his work will pass: the musical “blocks”, which are placed next to each other as in an archipel, in a part of De grote archipel, dedicated to and performed by Jelena Bazova, the references to music from other eras, but also something as elusive as spirituality in music and Mannekes characteristic variations in instrumentation. Gestures, originally written for organ, later arranged for marimba solo, and rewritten for bass and keyboard instrument will sound in the combination cello-marimba.

Ton de Leeuw, often named as the most important Dutch composer of the 20th century, is represented by three of his songs. From Messiaens Quatuor pour la fin du temps the intense “Louange à l’éternité de Jésus” will sound. Wilbert Bulsinks Vision for cello solo will be performed.

Jelena Bazova - piano
