Tap dancer Marije Nie, foot percussionist, and pianist Albert van Veenendaal, visual musician, open windows with the poetry of image and sound. They are alternately explosive and intimate, approachable and mysterious. A dance concert that comes close by, and then plunges into the depths with an unexpected jump.

Marije: "Lately I have been working a lot on interweaving theatrical elements with tap dance. Mostly I worked in Denmark, with the group Odin Teatret and director Eugenio Barba. Text and tap dance rhythms turn out to be powerful partners, and also the movements from tap dance can unfold in all kinds of other directions. That’s why this is a special concert for me, and especially because I can play with Albert van Veenendaal for the first time. I wanted to collaborate for years, because I love his compositions, which are both compelling and open.

Albert: "I think it's important to make music without predetermined ideas about what the music should sound like. The music should originate where you play, not only when you improvise, I also want written material to sound like that. What I call 'visual music' is about drive, risk, craftsmanship and not to forget the personality of the musician. Starting again and again with an unwritten sheet and surrendering to the attempt continues to fascinate me immensely".

Albert van Veenendaal
Albert has played all Dutch stages with his own groups and as a side man. Among others with Pavlov (as a trio and with a project around the work of Sinatra), piano trio Veenendaal/Kneer/Sun, Spoon 3 (songs, improvisation & electronics). In 2001 he founded 'Travelling Light', a platform that gives pianists the opportunity to play together. With this project he performed with a.o. Cor Fuhler, Jozef Dumoulin and Sylvie Courvoisier. Currently he plays literary concerts in projects of Corrie van Binsbergen with Toon Tellegen, A.L. Snijders, Dimitri Verhulst. In Van Binsbergen Playstation he has been a pianist since its foundation. He is also active in the electro-pop formation The Grooop and has a duo with percussionist Alan 'Gunga' Purves. Van Veenendaal composed work for Calefax reed quintet, the Amstel Saxophone Quartet, pianist Marcel Worms, harpist Miriam Overlach, Bigtet Tetzepi and others. The soundtrack he made for the film Flat Earth was nominated for a golden calf in 2014. He calls himself 'visual musician', because of the epic and cinematic character of his music. Improvisation and composition go hand in hand and merge seamlessly. From an open approach and interaction with his fellow musicians, he creates musical constructions in which his own style is instantly recognizable. Van Veenendaal is intensively engaged in expanding the sound of the grand piano. This resulted in his solo CD 'Minimal Damage' and performances for the TV program Vrije Geluiden and the VPRO Jazzlive weekend. He is interested in collaborating with other art disciplines such as film, dance and visual arts. This resulted in a number of interesting projects with contemporary artists and dancers (a.o. Marc Bijl, Monique Besten and Neel Verdoorn).
